Kinlord Istamil Corelanya was the leader of the Corelanya Clan for three tumultuous years in the mid-27th century of the First Era. Known as both a tyrant and a necromancer, he was the final ruler to bear the title of Kinlord within the clan.[1]
History[edit]
Reign[edit]
Little is known of Istamil's early years. Istamil came of age during a period of peace and stability secured by the Peace of Xor-Hist, established by his predecessor, Kinlady Torinwe. This accord ensured a lasting truce between the Corelanya Altmer and the Stone-Nest Argonians, allowing his older brother Ryethamil to inherit a realm free from external conflict, at least for a time. However, within the palaces and colleges of Sunport, the shadow of an ancient bargain with darker forces loomed ever nearer, threatening to unravel the peace Ryethamil had inherited. Istamil was a bold and ambitious warrior with grand visions of expanding Corelanya's influence, dreams he was willing to pursue even through the use of darker Daedric powers. He was a proud and charismatic noble and a great warrior popular in both the College of Rituals and the College of Sea and Sword.[1]
His brother became Kinlord in 1E 2607 and, as a ruler, actively restrained his younger brother's ambitions, choosing to act as a steward of his inherited lands rather than expanding his dominion. Over the years, the tension between the brothers deepened, until finally, in 1E 2631, Istamil made his move. He manipulated his older brother into a duel, killed him, and seized power. His reign was brief. As Kinlord, Istamil ruled as a tyrant, shocking many in Sunport with his fratricide. From the start, several colleges opposed him. In response, Istamil cracked down on dissent, igniting a civil war within the city. By 1E 2633, just two years after seizing power, only the College of Rituals remained loyal to his cause. Facing defeat, Istamil fled to the dark fortress of Mor Naril in the east, where he sought Molag Bal's patronage to destroy his foes. Terrible Daedric abominations and foul necromantic arts were unleashed upon all who resisted the Kinlord. Countless brave Corelanyas and many Argonians who dared to rise against the tyrant erished in those days. Istamil's triumph appeared all but certain until his cousin Vinutilmo Corelanya made his move. Guided by dream-visions, Vinutilmo sought the favor of the Daedric Queens: Azura, Meridia, and Nocturnal. With their help he managed to breach the walls of Mor Naril. There, within the Temple of the Final Dark, Vinutilmo confronted Istamil and killed him.[1]
Legacy[edit]
Following his death, Istamil was denied burial in the Corelanya Crypt, an honor afforded to every other ruler of the clan on Solstice.[2] Istamil features prominently in History of Clan Corelanya, authored by Regent Karinwe, the leader of Clan Corelanya during the Interregnum. Istamil's death also marked the end of the use of the title Kinlord within Clan Corelanya. His successor, Vinutilmo, chose instead the more modest title of Regent, which continued to be used for generations.[1] In 2E 582, the Worm Cult, under the leadership of Wormblood, sought to uncover secrets that had been deliberately buried at the close of Kinlord Istamil's tyrannical reign. Believing that vital knowledge had been sealed away with the fallen Altmeri rulers, they launched a raid on the Corelanya Crypts. Their goal was to locate and resurrect the spirit of someone who had personally known Istamil hoping that such a ghost might reveal forbidden truths long hidden in death.[3]
