An account of an ambassador's visit

In Sun's Height of the Year 570 of the Second Era, in the 131st year of Lady Karinwe Corelanya's regency, an ambassador from King Orgnum of the Maormer arrived in Sunport.

Sealord Loruuyamo was received with the customary diplomatic fanfare and offered accommodations in the palace. The sealord declined, saying he preferred to sleep aboard his ship. Ghostshark remained anchored in the harbor for the duration of his visit.

At the conclusion of the arrival ceremonies, Sealord Loruuyamo presented King Orgnum's greetings to the regent and her court. "Noble regent," he said, "we Sea Elves are a plain-spoken people, so I will not waste your time with artificial embellishments. May I simply state my king's proposal?"

Regent Karinwe inclined her head. "Of course, sealord. Speak in whatever manner you deem most comfortable."

"A new and untested queen is soon to come to the throne in Summerset," said Sealord Loruuyamo. "Some factions among the High Elves of that land are unsure about young Ayrenn. King Orgnum sees this situation as an opportunity. And he believes you might see it that way, as well."

"An opportunity for what, exactly?" Regent Karinwe replied.

"The redress of old wrongs, my lady regent. When Clan Corelanya was exiled from Summerset, your people were denied lands that should have been yours to rule. We, too, have been denied what should be ours. King Orgnum invites you to join forces so that we can fight for justice together."

"I am not sure what your king thinks we would bring to an alliance," said Regent Karinwe. "We have no great navy like the Pyandonean Armada. And even if I convinced my people of the necessity of war, the army we field would not make up a single Maormer fleet."

"Clan Corelanya's strength is measured in spells, not blades," the Maormer sealord answered. "The Altmer of Summerset are well acquainted with our storm-magic. They have not faced your necromancy or your command of Daedric powers in a very long time. This is the advantage my king sees in allying with you."

Regent Karinwe frowned, considering her response for a long moment. In bringing up the dark dealings of her ancient forebears, the Sea Elf ambassador gravely offended her. Her tone was cool when she finally spoke. "Some things are best left buried, sealord," she said. "Solstice is all the realm I desire to rule. King Hidellith has offered no harm or threat to my house. It is a common enough courtesy, but I intend to return it in kind. Your king might be happier if he followed that example."

"You would refuse King Orgnum's generous offer?" Sealord Loruuyamo demanded angrily.

"We seek friendship with all, sealord, including your king. Friends do not compel one another to follow them into wrongdoing." Regent Karinwe rose from her seat. "As always, Maormer ships are welcome to call at Sunport. But it might be wise if no more than one visited at a time. More than that, and I might question your king's intentions."

Sealord Loruuyamo scowled, but the audience was at an end. A week later, Ghostshark sailed back to Pyandonea and has not returned since.
