Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
Speak to Feyne Vildan to begin the quest. She says that Ja-Reet hasn't spoken since you rescued him. Earlier, Feyne had a talk with the tree-minder that went badly, so she doesn't feel comfortable asking her for help. Feyne asks you to go to the tree-minder for assistance. Her hut is just up the path from Feyne and Ja-Reet's location.
Speak with Tree-Minder Fal-Xoc in her hut. She reveals that she isn't angry with Feyne, nor does she blame her for anything. She also explains that the Dominion targeted Ja-Reet. As his spirit reunited with the Hist, both he and the Hist were open to suggestion. Now, Ja-Reet's spirit is lost. She needs freshly picked lanceata pholiota mushrooms to track Ja-Reet's spirit. They grow in the nearby Mushroom Cave. She warns you to beware the wamasu who dwell within the cave.
The mushroom cave in question is located off to the east of the village. The first wamasu is located near a fork in the path; if you wait for the right moment, you can sneak around it. There are two others that can't be snuck around — at least, not without cloaking abilities. Near the end of the southern wing of the cavern, you'll find a giant purple mushroom: the lanceata pholiota. Collect a sample, and then return to Tree-Minder Fal-Xoc. She tells you that the mushroom will put you in a dream-like state wherein you'll feel like Ja-Reet, and you'll know what to do to reunite his spirit with his body. As you eat the mushroom, the screen will go black, and you'll hear a voice.
- Spirit of the Hist: "Seek Ja-Reet's memories. Say what should have been said."
When you regain your vision, you'll still be in the tree-minder's hut, but the environment will take on a purple hue, and you'll be playing as Ja-Reet. Exit the hut, and you'll find that the villagers are no longer present. The village seems to be overrun by lurchers; one may even attack you right as you step out the door. You need to seek out and speak to three memories: the vision of Feyne Vildan, to the south; the memory of a plantation overseer, to the north; and the spectre of Ja-Reet's father, to the west.
Let's begin with the Ja-Reet's father. You'll find him lying on the ground in pain, within Resarath's Hut. Speak to him. Ja-Reet's father regrets not sending him to Black Marsh, insisting that Ja-Reet wasn't meant to be a slave. He explains that after he and his mate found out they were blessed with a clutch of eggs, their master offered to send the children to Black Marsh. However, Ja-Reet's parents chose to keep all of their children with them. He regrets this decision, as if they'd allowed their children to be sent off, none of them would have been born slaves. Ja-Reet's father asks you for forgiveness, and you give it, allowing him to die knowing that he will be at peace with his son. After each conflict you resolve, the Spirit of the Hist will speak to you.
"With untangled memories, The Hist will speak to you."
The Overseer lies to the north, standing on top of a small set of xanmeer ruins. He turns out to be Feyne's father, and is chiding Ja-Reet for looking at his daughter without bowing his head. You must be defiant, and insist that Ja-Reet and Feyne love each other, even as the Overseer threatens Ja-Reet. After the conversation, the hallucinatory overseer will dissipate.
This leaves the memory of Feyne Vildan, which can be found at the western entrance to the village. She questions Ja-Reet about his connections with Tree-Minder Fal-Xoc, and asks him not to go to Percolating Mire. She insists that Ja-Reet is fine the way he is and that she doesn't want him to change, but Ja-Reet reassures her that he wants to do this, and asks Feyne to travel with him. Feyne is elated that Ja-Reet wants her to come along on this journey with him, and assures him that they're stronger together than they are apart.
Feyne will vanish, and the Spirit of the Hist will speak to you again.
- Spirit of the Hist: "Come. Meet me beneath the Hist tree."
Go outside and approach the Hist tree, on the bank of the creek across from Ja-Reet's Hut. The Spirit of the Hist takes the form of a ghostly Argonian. Speak to him. He explains that an Altmer named Carethil is stealing the Hist's memories and weakening it, using Ja-Reet's fragile new connection to reach the Hist. Carethil is entering the Hist through Ja-Reet's mind, and his meddling will kill the Hist without your interference. The Spirit will send you down to the Hist's roots, where you must kill Carethil and save Ja-Reet's spirit.
The Spirit of the Hist will teleport you into a cavern beneath the Hist tree's roots. You'll find Carethil standing near a ghostly figure: Ja-Reet's spirit, held in magical shackles. Carethil has summoned a lurcher which will fight alongside him. Kill him, then break with the two Binding Crystals that hold Ja-Reet's spirit in place. Once that's done, you'll find yourself back in your own body within the tree-minder's hut. Speak with Tree-Minder Fal-Xoc. You've been out for a while. After hearing your explanation, the tree-minder tells you that Ja-Reet has developed a strong connection to the Hist through this experience. She insists that he would make an excellent healer, and asks you to convince him to stay and learn.
Head outside and speak to Ja-Reet. He can hear the Hist now, and knows his options. He can either stay in the Mire and become a healer, or return to Narsis as Feyne wants. He's not sure what to do. He wants Feyne to be with him wherever they live, but she's not happy in Percolating Mire, and Ja-Reet wasn't happy in Narsis. Life wouldn't be easy for Ja-Reet in Narsis, and the best he could get is work as a laborer. However, Feyne's family is in Narsis, and she misses her family. Ja-Reet wants her to be happy. On the other hand, Feyne wouldn't leave if Ja-Reet stayed, and once Ja-Reet's training is complete, they could move elsewhere, perhaps to Stormhold.
At this point, you can make the decision for him. Convince him to stay in the Percolating Mire and become a healer, or have him and Feyne return to Narsis. If you have him stay, he notes that he's always wanted to be a healer. If you convince him to leave, he rationalizes it by saying that it's only fair to return to Narsis to please Feyne, as she came to Black Marsh with Ja-Reet to make him happy. He thanks you either way.
