Ilunibi (also called the Ilunibi Caverns)[1] was an old sea cavern south across from Khartag Point in Vvardenfell, within the province of Morrowind. To the locals in Gnaar Mok, it was a hideout for smugglers and outlaws, often infested with rats and slaughterfish.[1] But by the late Third Era, it was a small, quiet retreat for members of House Dagoth to meditate in Dagoth Ur's ways. It was one of their several lesser shrines across the island, typically known as Ilunibi Shrine.[2]

Ilunibi was one of many natural caves across Vvardenfell. A theory proposed by the Speluncus Tamrielicum is that these caves once functioned like a system of nodes and capillaries for the living body, pulsing aedric essence across Nirn.[3] The ancient Nordic artifact from the early First Era, the Fists of Randagulf were hidden in Ilunibi's deepest chamber, the Soul's Rattle.[4]

When House Dagoth decided to use Ilunibi as their retreat is unknown. Though attempts to revive themselves have occurred throughout the years, its resurgence came in 2E 882, when Dagoth Ur and his minions re-awakened in Red Mountain.[5] By the time the Imperial Legion came into Vvardenfell in 3E 414,[6] Ilunibi remained under their noses for 13 years and was omitted from any of their maps.[7]

In 3E 427, the Imperial Legion in Buckmoth Legion Fort sent a patrol of soldiers to Gnaar Mok to investigate smugglers with ties to the Sixth House. They found Ilunibi and its priest, Dagoth Gares.[8] After fighting cultists and monsters, only one of these soldiers survived the encounter, horribly disfigured with corprus, and returned to Fort Buckmoth to relay his intel.[7] The Blades spymaster on Vvardenfell, Caius Cosades sent the Nerevarine to Buckmoth's champion, Raesa Pullia, to find this Sixth House base and kill Dagoth Gares. The hero eventually found the cave and fought their way to Dagoth Gares in Ilunibi's shrine. After a brief conversation, Dagoth Gares attacked the Nerevarine but in the end, he was defeated. Before his death, however, he cursed the hero with corprus. With their report, Caius Cosades sent the adventurer to get cured and pointed them toward Divayth Fyr in his tower of Tel Fyr.[9]
