Transclusion problem with my Standard Definitions

This isn't working properly at all. What I wanted to do is create a page that lists all of the "chapter summaries" within the Volume by transcluding the "chapter summary" from each Chapter page. Sounds easy enough, right? The problem comes in when a "chapter summary" includes links that rely on my Standard Definitions, such as {{{pathtopeople}}}. Even though I have defined {{{pathtopeople}}} on both the originating page (the Chapter page) and the destination page (this page, the Volume page), the variable seems to break when it is transcluded in.

I can only assume this has something to do with the {{NESTLEVEL}}, which I am not yet sure how to use. Also, I eventually want to transclude this page onto its parent page, so that the root of The Gaersmith Legacy contains "chapter summaries" and "volume summaries" transcluded in from each Volume.
