Template talk:Skyrim
Useful?[edit]
This template bugs me because it tries (and fails) to seamlessly sum up the entire games in a box. This template is rather useless since all the information can be found on SR:Skyrim, which is always on the sidebar. elliot (talk) 02:29, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- On the contrary. This template is not designed to sum the game in its entirety. I would never try to do that. The only purpose of it is to provide navigation between pages, and I believe it does this quite well. Now I understand if you think the items in this particular version of this navbox aren't general enough/too specific/irrelevant/not all-encompassing. But Since this is the first edition, this is to be expected. With time and edits, it will conform better to the perfect form of a navbox. (well, maybe) As for the horizontal line, I personally thought it was a nice touch to delimit the box from any aesthetics of each of the pages. My opinion on the matter may not represent the majority, but it was just a styling choice. As for the existence of the box, I think it's useful and very convenient for navigation. --Nicklink483 03:32, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

- I tend to agree partially here. A generic box might be too much, and I especially fear people are going to add it to every page. What I won't mind is a few similar boxes like Template:Skills in Skyrim for the few overview pages out there (e.g. like a box for all questlines on a questline article) --Timenn-<talk> 15:44, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

- I'm not sure this is the appropriate place to put this, but rpeh, I made it so navboxes start collapsed, but I don't have the authority to change it. I put the changed code at my sandbox1 page and it can be copied over to Template:Navbox/Start as-is. I already tested it and it works great. Should I put these changes in the talk page for the navbox next time? Thanks ahead of time --Nicklink483 02:16, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

(←) Just copying would suddenly make all other navboxes collapsed too. If we want to use this it would probably be better to have it as an option (which defaults to "no") for Template:Navbox/Start to minimize surprise. But personally I find a collapsed navbox (especially if it has mutliple collapsed levels) not too helpful - it's not very good at realizing its goal of making navigation faster. I think I'd find specialized boxes like Timenn suggested more useful --Alfwyn 16:37, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
- The huge collapsible Skyrim navboxes are great for finding things quickly. Though, I mainly use them to switch between content in the same category (e.g. clicking from Argonian to Bosmer), I appreciate the quick and thorough hierarchy. Since going back to the main namespace page is cumbersome, I always hit the search bar instead; this can be difficult for people when they don't know what they should search for. I think navboxes are the main list of links which people see and Skyrim:Skyrim is just a busy frontpage which nobody reads. On pages with shortened navboxes like the race pages, we already have lists of links included for related skills, people etc. Hyperlinks, site maps, search bars, and categories(tags) have their uses, I'm a little worried if we remove some of these too soon, our site will be harder to use.
- Our huge navbox does not do certain things right. It's not ubiquitous, meaning there's some moments when I need to find Skills and I have to hunt it down on the main page. And there's the part where it's collapsed by default, it takes time to expand it, but I think for a good reason, the aesthetic can hinder the categories section below.
- I really like Kiz's sandbox if we do decide to use the new navboxes though. Lukish_ Tlk Cnt 21:06, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
(←) Since the general consensus seems to be that we should have smaller/specialized templates, I will go ahead and remove the Skyrim one. We should then work towards having the more specific templates soon enough. elliot (talk) 03:18, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
