Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
It seems that Rilen Giral, a priest who may have given you some advice during Dangerous Offer, has been murdered. Chavana wants you to find the killer. Her only lead is Rilen's distinct silver staff. In honor of Rilen, who believed anybody could be redeemed, Chavana asks that you take the killers in peacefully if possible.
To get any leads, you will need to ask around the people of Narsis that Rilen worked with most. Any with the Pauper class (of which there are a wealth in the St. Veloth Quarter sewers) will have the lead you need, although you'll need 70+ disposition to get them to open up. They'll reference a market under the Grand Bazaar where Rilen's staff might have been sold off.
Head to the Grand Bazaar in the Market Quarter, enter its Underground area, and look for an entrance to the sewers on the western side. You'll find a secret market in this area. Look for an entrance to the No-Name Broker store. This is run by Brethis Girvu. He purchased the staff from a man and a woman. While he doesn't know their names, he does recall them saying that they were going back to the Backwater. That's a cornerclub by the west entrance to the St. Veloth sewers. Before you head out, you may wish to obtain Rilen Giral's Staff from Brethis, as it can be useful (and rewarding) later on.
When ready, go to the Backwater Cornerclub. You'll find two Dunmer in a room upstairs, named Gils Veran and Seni Veran. Seni is the talkative one. Challenge her about Rilen Giral. She claims that the two stabbed Rilen after an altercation, where Gils pulled a knife on the priest, only to receive a thwack on the head for his troubles. She argues that the killing was self-defense.
You can respond in a couple of ways here. You can simply tell them they'll die here, in which case you'll enter combat and must kill them. If you acquired Rilen's staff, you can read a prayer on the bottom that convinces the two to turn themselves in. Otherwise, you can ask them to turn themselves in, and at 80+ disposition they'll oblige. And finally, if you engaged Rilen's help during Dangerous Offer, you can recall that occasion and then ask the two to turn themselves in - now requiring only 60+ disposition to succeed.
If at any point you ask them to turn themselves in and they do not meet the disposition requirements, they will attack. In this instance you must kill them. However you proceed, return to Chavana once the Veran couple are dead or repentant. She'll be a little disappointed if the Verans are dead, but if they both turned themselves in and you recovered Rilen's staff, she'll bless it and grant it to you. She'll also ask that you go to the Eight-Bones Temple in the city's Council Quarter and speak to Milara Orvayn. Do so to conclude the quest. Milara has a different philosophy to Chavana - she'll reward you only if you killed the Veran couple. In this case the reward is a spell called Olms' Gavel, which absorbs 25 points of speed and strength for 20 seconds on touch.
Notes[edit]
- In the 25.09 version of the mod, Chavana notes that Rilen's body was found in the St. Veloth Quarter, while your journal indicates that it was found in the Market Quarter.
