Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
On delivering your message from Absolon to Xivilai Tatho during the events of Yamandalkal, the Xivilai will ask if you will hear an offer. Accept, and it will promise you a spell unseen among the mortals of Nirn for centuries in exchange for bringing Absolon to it.
Absolon is in the College of Firewatch's library, which you will have accessed during the events of the Yamandalkal quest. Approach him and ask him about Yamandalkal. He'll ask to hear how your adventure went. Answering "Xivilai Tatho asked me to bring you to him." will immediately turn him hostile if you don't immediately claim it as a joke, so don't do this. Instead, reply "I need you to come with me to Yamandalkal".
He'll ask why. Answer "Xivilai Tatho is too dangerous to be left alive". This will work only if you are Archmage of the Mages Guild, or have more than 50 Reputation, or have a level of 25 or more. If you meet any of these criteria, Absolon will agree to meet you in Yamandalkal. He'll ask that you bring a Grand Soul Gem (empty, obviously) with you. You only need to do this if you genuinely intend to help Absolon survive the encounter.
Return to Yamandalkal, just northeast of Nivalis. You'll find Absolon in the Crying Chambers of the dungeon, in the room with the lava pits. Speak to him. He will then begin to follow you and you can enter the Sanctum with him in tow. As you approach the statue of Mehrunes Dagon, with Xivilai Tatho standing beneath it, the Xivilai will issue a challenge to Absolon, and the two will begin to fight. You'll be able to choose now who to help - if Absolon, soultrap Xivilai Tatho and kill it. If the Xivilai, you only need stand back and watch the Odylic Mage be terminated.
If you let Xivilai Tatho win, speak to it after combat for your reward - a spell called Greater Summon Hunger, that can summon a Hunger to assist you in battle for 120 seconds. If you are playing Morrowind using MWSE (Morrowind Script Extender), this reward is upgraded to a unique Summon Devourer spell.
If you instead assist Absolon in soultrapping Xivilai Tatho however, talk to Absolon after the combat. You'll gain +5 general Reputation immediately, and he will ask for the gem containing Tatho's soul. You can refuse, retaining the gem worth 70,000 gold, without causing offence. If you agree however, Absolon will reward you with a soul gem containing the soul of a Dark Seducer, worth 80,000.
