Enchanted Follower Equipment

Do they benefit from the items which provide faster health regeneration? For example, I gave Marcurio an elven armor with - Health regenerates 30% faster - enchantment. Does it work on him or not? --Arkhon 03:54, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure if that works; for example I gave Illia a full set of dragon scale armor along with a ring and necklace and enchanted some piece with the fortify destruction enchantment. She has 100% fortify destruction yet she still switches to her melee weapon after a while. — Unsigned comment by Mr. Madness (talkcontribs) at 03:46 on 12 October 2012‎

Dawnguard Followers

I have just added who can become a Blade but am unsure of Serana right now, I am assuming if she can you'd have to kill Harkon first. With marrying a follower right now it doesn't look possible (talked to them with the amulet after learning of marriage from Maramal) but I will be sure after I kill Harkon. Anyone already got that info? If so post here with it if you don't know how to add it. --SPMcKinney 01:37, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Mage followers and robes

In the section about College of Winterhold followers the article says "however, they will not equip any other robes, since all robes have an armor rating of "0".", but this isn't strictly true. For example, I can give Brelyna master robes and enchanted circlets, and while she won't equip them immediately, she often does so after a fast travel. She does sometimes switch back to her default stuff after later fast travels, however, but overall she seems to spend most of the time in the equipment I give her. Is there any information on how this works, how followers choose between equipment with identical armor ratings and how fast traveling affects this? — Unsigned comment by 76.174.57.121 (talk) at 04:34 on 7 August 2012

Tested on xbox on sept 4 with Brelyna. She equiped a few flavors of custom robe sporadicly, prefering one over the others. Not sure why, but mages CAN equip something other than default robes. — Unsigned comment by 69.62.156.214 (talk) at 05:43 on 5 September 2012‎
Here's how to get a robe-wearing follower to wear different robes/clothes (not armor). Step 1: Empty Brelyna's visible inventory except for what you want her to wear/use. Step 2: Give her a helmet. Step 3: Save the game. Step 4: Load that game which you just saved. Step 5: Take the helmet from her inventory. Step 6: Observe that she is now wearing/using what you wanted her to wear/use. Step 7: Don't take or add anything from her inventory (she's a mage, not a pack mule, you know), doing so may immediately cause her to revert back to her starting robes and hood.
As to how followers choose equipment that has an armor rating or damage rating: They generally prefer things with higher BASE (unmodified) values and include weight and speed/base-damage-per-second in their decision making. If you look at the smithing perk tree, followers prefer armor and weapons at the top of the list of perks over ones below them. Niether smithing nor enchanting can cause a follower to choose an iron helmet over an ebony helmet, regardless of the magnitude of modified stats. Followers generally prefer to equip staves and two-handed weapons over one-handed weapons even if they'd be more effective with the latter. Followers generally prefer to equip a shield and a one-handed weapon over dual-wielding two one-handed weapons. By knowing these general preferences that followers have, you know what to keep out of their inventory in order to prevent them from automatically switching to gear that does not fit with your own desires.
Clothes do not have a base armor rating so followers are very unstable when it comes to sticking with a decision about what to wear in terms of clothing. Conducting steps 1 through 7 as explained at the beginning of this entry is one way to deal with this. Skysword (talk) 23:00, 26 September 2012 (GMT)

Violent follower

On PC. On three occasions now my follower, Lydia, has got into a fight all on her own with city guards or an Imperial soldier. After she dispatches them everything goes on normally with no assault charge or bounty directed at my character. Is this normal? Sniffles 21:54, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Followers Unlocking Doors

Okay. I found this one glitch with followers that I even made a YT video about.. It is pretty simple.. Get your follower to wait by the door then run into your follower, which will make them back up into the door. Once they back up into the door, they'll unlock it and open it for enough room to back up... I've used this plenty of times and unlocked man doors such as Master Locks and even doors that Requires a Key, like the Thieves Guild Vault Door...

Should this be under bugs or something? — Unsigned comment by 172.162.214.169 (talk) at 16:29 on 16 August 2012‎

Yea I think that should count as a glitch, I will try it out. Fireanddream (talk) 21:33, 6 October 2012 (GMT)

Followers will kill your character

As a case in point: I had Lydia wait in a hallway while I went on ahead and roused some bandits to chase me. Coming around two corners to my follower and BLAM! Dead and reload. I did this almost a dozen times before I realized I was taking frost and fireball fire from the follower and hadn't even been touched by the bandits. — Unsigned comment by Sniffles (talkcontribs) at 00:39 on 6 September 2012‎

You have to be careful giving your followers AOE weapons. I intially thought Dwemer Spiders exploded in a damaging fireball when killed; turns out it was Lydia finishing them off with a fireball staff I had her carry. I'm just thankful their arrows don't seem to inflict friendly fire. — Unsigned comment by 60.240.107.18 (talk) at 15:24 on 6 September 2012‎

Fortify Destruction (and probably all other schools)

Tested with Serana and four 25% destruction reduction enchantments: she'll get unlimited uses of Harkon's blade, and presumably any other enchanted weapon, but not from staffs. Weird. — Unsigned comment by 186.19.144.228 (talk) at 04:44 on 9 September 2012‎

I got something similair once when I gave Lydia an enchanted mace with no uses left she got unlimited uses. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 03:34 on 31 October 2012
It may be possible that followers sometimes ignore the charge usage of certain weapons. For example I've noticed that, (for me at least), Kharjo will use destruction type staves without using any charge, or very little charge. This is without any enchanted armor being equipped to him. He will still use other staves normally, and drain their charges at a normal rate...... Gamer3427 (talk) 01:45, 16 December 2012 (GMT)

Which Followers Are Eligible To Become Stewards?

I think that there should be some indication on which followers are eligible to become stewards in the Hearthfire DLC. Seeing as its seems to not be every one and dependent on if you have completed the follower's quest. Perhaps a list of some sort of the confirmed followers as stewards. — Unsigned comment by Iam4ever (talkcontribs) at 04:47 on 9 September 2012‎

More or less all of them, there might be a few exceptions that I haven't found yet but in general if you can have them join the blades they can be stewards. That's the list I've been going off of and haven't found any cases where that hasn't worked yet. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 01:50, 9 September 2012 (EDT)

Yeah 98.218.162.126 I'm not surprised some of them cannot be stewards. As I said I was going off that list as a starting point but hadn't gotten them all tested yet. () Until it's confirmed whether they can become stewards, they should not have a green tick in the steward box. Otherwise it's misleading. For example, Mjoll was listed as able to be a steward, but she cannot. I've edited the page to reflect this. — Unsigned comment by 2.28.137.184 (talk) at 14:34 on 24 September 2012‎

It's unfortunate that what was posted at the time of your original post earlier was misleading, but thank you for changing the page to remove the false information. I've changed the column from blank (which indicates "No" on this page) to a {{huh}} tag, until other users can confirm one way or another. The user who marked it as blank/No originally was the same one who changed it to yes later-- this seems to have been an intentional change, and I can only speculate, but it's possible the user wasn't able to get the steward dialogue originally and then found out later that they actually could. Either way, it's best if other users can chime in with their experience before removing the huh tag altogether. — ABCface 15:29, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
I have not personally confirmed Mjoll as able to become steward but had seen a post of someone who claims to have her as such. --Skulda (talk) 19:01, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
Thanks for clarifying, Skulda. We'll leave the huh tag up for now until we get some more feedback then. — ABCface 19:04, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
I was unable to recruit Mjoll the Lioness as a steward for Lakeview Manor despite multiple attempts and with methods to single out variables which may affect the outcome. Across different message boards, there are conflicting first-hand accounts regarding this issue and I believe it is due to one of three things: Either trolls are spreading misinformation again OR the "radiant AI" of the game makes each play-through different in terms of who can be a steward OR an actual bug is interfering with intended content. None of those theories have been confirmed yet. If someone has Mjoll as a steward WITHOUT using console commands, please let us know and include as much information as possible such as which plot of land they are steward of and what wings (if any) have been added onto the main hall. A link to a youtube video showing Mjoll as a steward would be highly appreciated as well. Skysword (talk) 21:45, 26 September 2012 (GMT)

() I couldn't get any of the mercenaries to serve as steward and all the ones with a yes I tried but none could be a steward. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 13:43 on 7 October 2012‎

That sounds more like a problem with your game than a problem with the list. Some of those on the list are definitely verified. — ABCface 14:30, 7 October 2012 (GMT)

() Once again Mjoll is listed as capable of becoming a steward, although I can see no indication of the evidence requested by Skysword. As far as I can tell, this page is therefore misleading once again. If there is now confirmation that she can be a steward, it'd be nice to know the details. Just in case, I haven't reverted it to the huh tag. — Unsigned comment by 2.28.137.184 (talk) at 18:52 on 16 October 2012‎

See this section for details on how/why the information was changed. If that info's right and you were married to Mjoll, that would probably be why you can't have her as a steward. — ABCface 18:56, 16 October 2012 (GMT)
Thanks, but (i) I wasn't married to her; (ii) my experience accords with what Skysword reported above - multiple attempts, using different variables, etc; (iii) there's still no evidence that despite all of that, Mjoll can actually be a steward - there is merely speculation based on faction and voice style (and Mjoll has a lot of unique dialogue - would that - or Aerin - not be a possible variable that would exclude her?). Anyway, if she really can be a steward, and both Skysword and I missed something, shouldn't it be easy to prove with video? — Unsigned comment by 2.28.154.15 (talk) at 22:20 on 16 October 2012‎
I've added a VN tag to Mjoll's steward checkmark with a link to this section of the talk page, so hopefully others will give input so we can get to the bottom of this. — ABCface 23:55, 16 October 2012 (GMT)

As far as I know she can't be a steward without console commands — Unsigned comment by 209.91.107.184 (talk) at 11:24 on 30 October 2012
She can't. Her voice type (FemaleNord) is not in the list "VoicesFollowerAll", which is a requirement for the steward offer dialogue to come up. Adding her voice to that form list allows her to be a steward, but she doesn't have any lines recorded for being a steward, so she will be completely silent if you ask her any steward related lines of dialogue. Which Follower Creatures Are Eligible To Become Pets?

The Creatures table would benefit from having an added "Pet(HF)" column with green checkmarks where applicable, similar to the new Steward columns above. Examples: I've seen reports of Meeko, Bran, Vigilance as child-requested pets.Lottery Discountz (talk) 07:37, 10 September 2012 (EDT)

I'll go ahead and add the column to the table. Editors can then fill in information as they come across it. — ABCface 09:16, 10 September 2012 (EDT)
I do think Frostbite Spiders should be added to the creature page as Hostile Animals instead of the monster page. They are an animal like the others on that page and a baby version can be brought home and adopted as a pet by the children. People do have "bugs" particularly tarantulas and scorpions for pets fairly commonly.
For that matter Chaurus should be on the creature page as well. They are just large bugs, thus animals, not much different than a mud crab.
I would not categorize either of these as mythical/magical creatures, per se, although the chaurus does not really have a direct analogue to RL. It is a strange mishmash of earwig-like and wasp-like features. --Skulda (talk) 20:04, 24 September 2012 (GMT)

Extra Follower Glitch

I figured out that when you go back into the dungeons below Castle Volkihar, the one guarded by skeletons, Serana will 'teleport' to you and follow you... Even if you already have another follower. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.210.132 (talk) at 20:32 on 22 September 2012‎

Couple of more possible two follower Glitches - both related to Serana and on Xbox. I have completed Dawnguard and have Serena as a follower. First, I started the Proving Honor quest and got a message that my follower had been replaced by my Companion - but she continued to follow me. I met Farkas at the Cairn, and both he and Serana continued with me through the ruins. Farkas "unhooked" as normal when I returned and finished up the quest. Later this morning, but after at least one exit to the XBox home screen and a game reload, I entered Darklight Tower and completed Illia's quest. At the end, chose the option for her to be a follower and immediately chose follow me. Both Illa and Serana are now following me. I don't know if the Companion replacement message cause the possibility of two followers, if this is pretty common with Serana in other instances than stated in the notes/bugs, or if Illia would be a second follower with Serana without the earlier companion odditiy. Posting here for others to confirm and add to notes/bugs as is proper. Ilysanna (talk)
That happens because Serana works differently to most followers. The majority of permanent followers are linked to factions that makes the process of making them a follower almost automatic. Serana's way of following you is the same way that quest followers follow you. In the quests where one of the companions follow you, anyone currently following you will be dismissed and the follower count will be set to one while they follow. Since certain followers do not work in the automatic way of most followers, these have to be specifically defined to be dismissed. In the base game, the only followers that worked this way were Cicero and the Dark Brotherhood Initiates, but Serana is not set to be automatically dismissed since the developers did not alter the quest to dismiss Serana as well when Dawnguard was released. This follower mechanic is also why Cicero, the Dark Brotherhood Initiates and Serana can be subject to another 'glitch' regarding multiple followers: there is a delay between them starting to follow you and the follower count being set to one. In this time, another follower can be recruited and they will follow you at the same time, while the follower count remains at one. Technically, it's not a glitch, but an oversight. Argis cannot be a steward

Contrary to what the page currently indicates, Argis the Bulwark cannot be appointed as a steward for the Hearthfire homes. This is likely due to the voice actor (Popeye Vogelsang) being unavailable to voice the new dialogue. Vogelsang also voices Ahtar, Benor and Farkas-- all of whom are followers and none of whom can be appointed as stewards.174.0.115.201 05:20, 30 September 2012 (GMT)

Due to conflicting information, I've changed the "Yes" checkmark to a {{huh}} tag. Until we have access to game-data (when Hearthfire is released on PC) we won't have a definitive answer to this, as all information is from different individual gameplay experiences. — ABCface 20:20, 30 September 2012 (GMT)

Which Followers are Essential?

I know that a few followers are essential, if not permanently then at least for some time. (Mjoll is always essential, for example.) I think it would be good to have a category along with "blades" and "marry" to mark followers as "essential", since knowing if your follower is essential or not helps a lot when you take them with you to high-risk places. ~melgna, 22:27 1 October 2012 (PST) 69.181.225.218

Regarding Morality

I have a question about the Morality values ascribed to NPCs. Specifically about the value of "1" which is described like so:

"1: Violence Against Enemies. NPC is willing to commit violence against enemies, as well as property crimes. NPC is not willing to attack innocent people."

Not only am I uncertain as to why "violence against enemies" constitutes a crime (and aren't all followers willing to be violent against enemies regardless of their morality rating?), but I also don't see any followers listed with a morality value of "1"174.0.115.201 11:14, 7 October 2012 (GMT)

The morality values apply to all NPCs, not just followers (it's simply copied from the NPCs page), so that's why some of the definitions may not make sense for just followers. NPCs who are not followers have relationship ranks with other NPCs, sometimes considering other non-hostile NPCs to be enemies. In those instances, attacking the NPC would be a crime. The fact that none of the followers have a morality rating of 1 is something the developers probably did intentionally. — ABCface 14:30, 7 October 2012 (GMT)

Requirements for a potential steward.

The conditions for a follower to become a steward are as follows:

  • Must be in "CurrentFollowerFaction" (They must be the player's current permanent follower. The Dark Brotherhood followers and Serana are not considered to be as such).
  • Must not be in any of the following factions:
    • "BYOHHouseStewardFaction"
    • "BYOHHouseStewardNoForcegreet"
      • This means that they must not already be a steward in any of the player's properties.
    • "PlayerMarriedFaction"
      • This means that the player must not be married to this person.
  • Their voice type must be one of the following:
    • FemaleCondescending
    • FemaleEvenToned
    • FemaleSultry
    • MaleEvenToned
    • MaleNord
    • MaleOrc
    • MaleYoungEager
    • FemaleCommander
    • FemaleYoungEager

I hope that this is helpful. LoftedAphid86 14:04, 13 October 2012 (GMT)

I see the same in the game data (essentially current follower, not married), except for the voice type requirement. The check is for the voicetype included in the FLST BYOHVoicesNonUnique, which consists of:
BYOHVoicesNonUnique
:* FemaleChild
  • FemaleCommoner
  • FemaleCondescending
  • FemaleCoward
  • FemaleElfHaughty
  • FemaleEvenToned
  • FemaleNord
  • FemaleSultry
  • MaleChild
  • MaleElfHaughty
  • MaleEvenToned
  • MaleGuard
  • MaleNord
  • MaleNordCommander
  • MaleOldGrumpy
  • MaleOrc
  • MaleSlyCynical
  • MaleYoungEager
  • FemaleCommander
  • MaleCommander
  • MaleCondescending
  • FemaleYoungEager
  • MaleCommonerAccented
I didn't check which of those voicetypes are actually used by followers, however. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:30, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
If you look at the dialogue section, you can also see that the dialogue for the steward offer also requires the follower to be on the FormList 'VoicesFollowerAll'. This is why Mjoll cannot be a steward. LoftedAphid86 16:51, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
Thanks for clearing that up. --Alfwyn (talk) 17:00, 7 November 2012 (GMT)

Hearthfire pets - child exclusive pet?

I've found something interesting in the CK related to potential pets:

In the Creation Kit, the faction 'BYOHRelationshipPotentialPetFaction' has four ranks:

  • (0) Default
  • (1) Not Allowed
  • (2) Allowed (Aventus Only)
  • (3) Allowed (All)

While ranks zero, one and three are nothing special, rank two suggests that there are pets that only Aventus will adopt.

Since someone said that their children were afraid of the Death Hounds, I'm willing to bet that they're an Aventus only pet.

It's possible that the Armoured Trolls may be adoptable by Aventus as well, since Vigilance is adoptable, though it's more likely that they cannot be adopted at all.

This just makes the fact that you cannot adopt Aventus due to a bug even more of a pity, since it looks like he was going to be more than just a mindless cyborg once adopted.

I guess he's going to have to be the Serana of adoption.

I'll see if I can test this theory by using console commands to put Aventus in the orphanage, but I've already adopted children on the characters that are currently able to, so it may be a while before I can get to the stage where I can test it. LoftedAphid86 10:22, 21 October 2012 (GMT)

I don't believe there is, unfortunately. To get around this, you can order your follower to pick the item you want them to carry off the ground (make sure they are in stacks of less than 6), since they will do so even if they cannot hold anything else. LoftedAphid86 16:23, 8 December 2012 (GMT)
It might be possible to pickpocket the hidden items off of your follower with the highest level pickpocketing perks. They would of course have to be dismissed as a follower in order for the pickpocketing dialog to be accessible. I would test this myself, but as I don't have a character with those perks anymore, (I deleted my old characters to make the save/load screen less cluttered), it would be a while before I could test this theory myself.....
