Ice Form is a dragon shout that encases foes in a solid block of ice which renders them completely immobile for the duration of the shout. Damage is dealt to the target over time. The area of effect of the shout is quite narrow, but multiple enemies can be frozen with one shout if they are standing side by side or immediately in front of or behind each other. If the enemy is hit while frozen, they will break free. Enemies know this and attack to free their encased comrades if they can.

The effects of this shout are Destruction-based; as such, enemies can block Ice Form using a ward spell. This, combined with the shout's long recharge time, may cause difficulties against spellcasting enemies.

It is impossible to pickpocket an ice-encased NPC.

Possible Uses[edit]

  • Frozen enemies are also knocked down and it takes about 5 seconds for them to climb back up when they break free, giving you a good opportunity to attack.
  • Temporarily neutralizing a difficult enemy so you can heal, flee, or engage other enemies.
  • Freezing lots of enemies at once if outnumbered.
  • Giving yourself time to use a master-level spell.
  • Immobilizing a fairly distant target so you can get closer to it without taking damage.
  • Freezing an archer standing on a wall above you so they fall off the wall towards you.
  • Making use of a pickpocketing bug; by activating a valid pickpocketing target in sneak mode while they are standing back up after the ice thaws, you have a 100% chance of success to steal anything in their inventory. This won't gain you pickpocketing experience, but it can be used to steal impossibly large sums of gold back from trainers. You can speed up the process by casting a calm spell on the target to end the paralysis effect early.

Notes[edit]

  • The Dragonborn FrostDB ability turns the Frost Breath shout into a variation of Ice Form, making this shout somewhat obsolete. To be precise, the alteration freezes enemies for less time (15 seconds) but allows you to attack them the whole time, albeit with reduced damage.
  • Any spell cast at an enemy while they are under the effects of this shout will instantly break the ice as if you had "attacked" them, even non-damaging spells like Paralyze.
  • Like other frost-based magic, Dwarven automatons are immune to it, so it's impossible to freeze them solid with this shout.
  • If an enemy falls off from a height or slides down a hill that would normally kill them after being hit by this shout (such as what can happen under the effects of Unrelenting Force or the Cyclone shout), when the Ice Form shout wears off after their tumble they will only have received the frost damage from the shout and not the fall, due to the paralysis protecting from falling damage.
  • If an enemy that is hit by this shout lands in the frosty spots on the ground created by this shout, it will count as an "attack" (as they deal damage) and the ice will shatter, freeing them. If another enemy that wasn't hit by the shout directly steps in the small areas of frost, they will take minor frost damage over a few seconds.
  • As Nord vampire NPCs are immune to frost-based magic, they will not take any damage from this shout, though they will still be encased in the ice and frozen solid.
