Talk to Proctor Luciana Pullo in the Clockwork Basilica to begin this quest. She suggests talking to Chancellor Gascone in order to determine how The Shadow of Sotha Sil and the cultists are moving through the Brass Fortress so easily. Gascone is still in the jail cell at the east end of the Basilica in the Ineluctable Fold. Gascone realises that you are locked out of the Cogitum and attempts to strike a bargain: a contract carried by one of Clavicus Vile's Skaafin enforcers in the Mechanical Fundament in exchange for the information you seek. You can either ask for more information about the contract; either way, you will need to pass a Persuasion check to get Gascone to tell you about two Gloaming Gates that lead to Nocturnal's Realm of Evergloam. Talk to Luciana, who will suggest that you investigate one gate each in the interests of time.

Exit the Clockwork Basilica. If you have unlocked the wayshrinez, you can use those; otherwise, leave the Brass Fortress and follow the main road south to the Crossroads and then east over a bridge to the Mire Mechanica. Turn off the path just before the second bridge to the Everwound Wellspring, and descend into the floor of the ravine to a cave containing a closed Gloaming Gate. The Knave of Rooks will show up and volunteer to activate the gate for you. Finish up the conversation and enter the portal to the Evergloam.

Although the Knave of Rooks asks you to follow him, you will need to lead. Proceed south-W=west along the stream bed to a path that will lead you further into the Gloaming, fighting small groups of Gloam Wolves, Night Terrors, Gloam Weaver spiders, and Shrikes along the way. When you reach an archway atop a ruined staircase, take the path to the right. At a fork in the path, the Knave of Rooks will prompt you to always take the left path. Continue until you reach a closed gate; turn left and follow the narrow path to a crossroads, where the Knave of Rooks will direct you up up a staircase on the other side of the closed gate. Turn left and follow the path again over a bridge and along a river until you see a staircase marked by two red banners; an archway through the wall to the right of this leads to the Portal to the CLiffs of Twilight.

Once through the portal, descend to the river and follow the path and up a series of staircases to a church. Defeat Nightmaiden Viriana to save Proctor Luciana and take the final portal back to the Clockwork City. The way ahead is still blocked by shadow, but Luciana remembers a spell taught her by Lord Seht that opens the way. Talk to Luciana one final time to complete this quest. You can keep talking to her to begin the next quest and enter the Cogitum Cnetralis.

Notes[edit]

  • While the Clockwork Clinician states to search the eastern quarter of the Brass Fortress for a tok-plug, the objective marker actually points to the Reactor District, the western district of the fortress.
  • Despite the Knave of Rooks telling you the portal to Evergloam is closed, it can still be used, coinciding with the fact that the objective to speak to it at this point before proceeding is optional.
    • It also says right after that these portals can only be used with the help of Daedric crows. However, you can use gates such as these to access Exarchs' Egress and the Shadow Cleft without any help.
  • Upon entering Evergloam, the Knave of Rooks asks you to follow it, but it will follow you instead.
  • The shadows that Luciana Pullo dispels activates an elevator that now serves as shortcut leading to and from the Clockwork Basilica.

Bugs[edit]

  • Despite dialogue from Divayth Fyr mentioning that the Shadow of Sotha Sil uses the Skeleton Key to lock all doors into the Mechanical Fundament, access to it still remain available, such as the doors in the marketplace. ?
  • Nightmaiden Viriana can disappear at random upon entering the church in Evergloam. ?
    • Walking around the church or exiting and going back in makes her reappear.
  • Stepping through the shadows covering the elevator doesn't inflict damage. The same shadows encountered in the following quest, "Where Shadows Lie" do however. ?
  • Taking the elevator down into the Mechanical Fundament from the Clockwork Basilica results in the shadow dispelling effect to occur again after the loading screen. ?

Quest Stages[edit]

Unto the Dark
Finishes Quest Journal Entry
I need to Speak at the former Chancellor Gascone to see if he knows how the Whispering Shadows cultists are moving through the city. We may be able to use their own methods against them.
Objective: Talk to Chancellor Gascone
Gascone claims to have the information I need, but he wants a favor in return. I either need to help him retrieve a mysterious contract, or convince him to tell me now.
Complete one: Find Chancellor Gascone's Contract or Get the Information from Gascone
I learned that the Whispering Shadows cultists use portals called Gloaming Gates to navigate the city in secret. Luciana and I could use these gates to reach the Cogitum Centralis—and Sotha Sil. I should inform Luciana.
Objective: Talk to Luciana
Luciana and I decided to split up and explore separate Gloaming Gates. I must travel to the eastern reaches of the Radius to find one of these gates.
Objective: Find and Enter the Gloaming Gate
Optional Step: Talk to the Knave of Rooks
I entered the Gloaming Gate and found myself in the Evergloam—the realm of the Daedric Prince, Nocturnal. I need to look for other portals that might lead me to my destination: the Cogitum Centralis.
Objective: Navigate the Evergloam
An imposing Nocturnal Shrike, Nightmaiden Viriana, captured Luciana. I must defeat this Daedric creature to free my companion.
Objective: Defeat Nightmaiden Viriana
I defeated Nightmaiden Viriana. I should follow Luciana through the nearby Gloaming Gate. Hopefully this one leads back to the Clockwork City.
Objective: Enter the Final Gloaming Gate
Finishes quest☑We successfully navigated the Evergloam and found our route to the Cogitum Centralis. I should talk to Luciana about our next move.
Objective: Talk to Luciana

  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
