Quest-Related Events[edit]
At the westernmost ruined house in Riften, you'll see a distressed Dunmer. Her family's business was destroyed by Sinmur. She wants to take Bar-Neeus' stall to allow her family's business recover. She thinks the Argonian merchant has been involved in illegal goods and would like you to find proof to get him arrested so her family can move into his stall:
- "The giant left us little more than our lives. We have no wares and no coin to rebuild. My mother is too proud to admit it, but this may be the end for us."
- Sounds grim. Can I help?
- "Perhaps. I hear the merchant Bar-Neeus may be peddling illegal goods in the central market. If this could be proved, he'd be ruined and we would take his place."
- But how to prove it?
- "Go to the central market and search Bar-Neeus's tent. Look for anything he might be hiding. Report back to me with your findings."
- I'll look into it.
She mentions that Bar-Neeus is her family's director competitor and the guards are more sympathetic to her cause:
- "Some of the guards are willing to help us, but they need an excuse. If you search Bar-Neeus's stall, you might find illegal wares. My family would be in your debt."
- Why single out Bar-Neeus?
- "We offer the same goods. By eliminating him, we claim a prime location and remove a direct competitor."
After looking into the matter, return to her with her findings that the merchant has no illegal goods but she still thinks he is shady and might be in league with the Worm Cult since his stall was not damaged during the attack by Sinmur. She wants you to plant Altmer ale in Bar-Neeus's supply chest and inform Guard Bronorr of this contraband:
- "You're back. Tell me you found something!"
- I didn't spot anything illegal.
- "He's clever, I'll give him that. He's making too much money not to be doing something shady. I think we can help open the authorities' eyes."
- I'm with you. What's the plan? / What's your plan?
- "Place this flask of Altmer ale in Bar-Neeus's supply chest and then notify Guard Bronorr at the Fighters Guild. You'll be rewarded well when it's all over."
- I'm not sure I like where this is going.
- "We're talking about justice here, for my family and all of Riften! Don't you think it odd that Sinmur spared Bar-Neeus's stall and demolished ours? Rumor has it he's in league with the Worm Cult. Are you with them or us?"
She will mention that it is illegal to sell goods from the Dominion or Covenant in Pact lands:
-
- Why would that cause trouble for Bar-Neeus?
- "Don't you know? It's illegal to sell goods from the Dominion or Covenant here. And black marketeers are dealt with harshly, in Riften at least."
If you speak to her again, she will mention Bronorr is one of the guards that don't like Bar-Neeus:
- "Plant this among Bar-Neeus's wares. And speak only to Bronorr at the Fighters Guild when it's done."
- Why Bronorr?
- "Let's just say Bronorr has been looking for a reason to boot that Argonian out of Riften. You don't need to know more than that."
If you agreed to help Sarisa at first, but changed your mind, Bar-Neeus will give you a package to deliver to her instead. She is ashamed of her actions but is too proud to admit but nonetheless accepts the gesture:
- "Is it done? Have the guards taken him away? I didn't hear any commotion."
- I told Bar-Neeus of your scheme. He gave me a package for you.
- "A package from Bar-Neeus? Is it revenge?
But no—it's supplies and gold. He has shamed me! I'll take his gift for my family, but I'll never forgive him for it!"
After the quest, if you refused to implicate Bar-Neeus:
- "I'll never be able to face Bar-Neeus again, curse him. His generosity has saved us and we'll rebuild. Only when I can repay him will my shame be lessened. Damn him, and you!"
If you went ahead with her plan and framed Bar-Neeus, she will be found in the Marketplace:
- "Unfortunate, but Bar-Neeus was bound to be caught sooner or later."
- Glad to be of service. About my payment…
- "Of course, gladly. And you have the enduring friendship of the Rothalen family. Let us never speak of this incident again."
After the quest she'll move into Bar-Neeus' stall:
- "Both of us are best served by never mentioning Bar-Neeus's name again."
