When he notices your approach, he plead to you "Stranger! Help me! We haven't got long!"

Speak with him and he'll ask you to find reinforcements for Falkreath, instead you offer to try and break the siege for them.

"Friend, take up my cause. I beg you. Send word to Whiterun—to Riften—to anywhere! Falkreath Hold is falling!
An army of beastmen batters our gates … we aren't long for Sovngarde, but our kinsmen can carry Shor's vengeance in our stead."
If the battle's not decided, there may still be time to win it.
"We've beaten the brutes back near a dozen times, but their numbers never dwindle. What hope do a few score soldiers, starved and wounded, stand against a horde of beasts twice their size?"
Tell me about the enemy you face.
"Reachmen and minotaurs with fearless, hungry eyes. They charge our gates howling like mad dogs.
Many fled them from the outlying villages, helpless to stop their loved ones from being dragged off to some ugly fate. The hold was their last hope."
The day's not lost just yet. I'll break the siege.

You can ask him more questions after accepting the quest.

"You have courage to match Eerika's, at least. Maybe it'll be enough.
The road leads to the main gate—through the Reachman lines—if it still stands, you'll find our Thane there."
Who is this Eerika you mentioned?
"The daughter of Jarl Skjoralmor and Thane of Falkreath. The hold would have fallen long ago if not for her.
She'll stand against the beasts long after the walls crumble, mark my word."
What are you doing out here?
"I'm no deserter, if that's what you're thinking! I was to make for the nearest hold and bring reinforcements, but my leg was shattered by one of those minotaur brutes.
Left me for dead … or near enough so as to make no difference."
Will you be alright out here with those wounds?
"Doesn't matter. I'm a runner who can't run, or even stand. Save my home and at least I can look my father in the eye at the Hall of Valor.
I may not die on my feet, but the Reach-dogs will have to pry this knife from my cold dead hands."
