Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
Investigation[edit]
Upon arriving in Crow's Wood, you'll see Telbaril Oran standing next to your point of entry. Talk to him, and he'll tell you that he needs to stabilize the portal leading into the Crow's Wood. He will tell you that he came here to search for his missing father, and sends you to check out an old house for any clues about where his father went.
The house is a burned-down shack to the west. Inside, you find charred notes describing an encounter between the writer, a witch, and someone under her command called the "Magister of the Blackfeather Court." The Magister taught the writer a number of spells on the witch's orders, and the writer locked the witch in a tower afterward. When you finish reading the notes, Telbaril will join you inside the house. He stabilized the portal, and after looking at the notes, asks you to investigate the Blackfeather Court. It's worth noting now that you can start another quest that takes you to the Blackfeather Court, Decree of the Court, by talking to the crow on the steps of the house. If you want to do that quest, doing it while doing this one is very convenient.
Regardless, Blackfeather Court is near the center of Crow's Wood. Speak to the Court Magister, a talking crow perched upon a rock. She tells you that the Crow Mother is lonely, and that Rulantaril promised to stay with her in exchange for learning magic. The power of that deal brought him back to the Crow's Wood. The Magister tells you that Rulantaril left his key to the Crow Mother's tower nearby, in a tower where it's being guarded.
Dealing with the Deal[edit]
Following her tip, you'll find the ruined structure to the northeast, protected by a Flame Atronach named Rulantaril's Construct. Defeat it, open the ruined chest, and take the key. Be quick: the Atronach will respawn if anyone else opens the chest while you are there. Once you have the key, head inside the tower. You'll find the Crow Mother, a hagraven, waiting for you. She says that she bargained with Rulantaril in good faith, and that he has to stay with her to uphold the agreement. You have to choose: kill her, subdue Rulantaril, or kill both of them.
If you decide to make Rulantaril stay, the Crow Mother will respond to your diplomacy with thanks, and ask you not to hurt Rulantaril too badly. Enter the basement and find Rulantaril. Rulantaril is hostile and will surrender after losing half his health. Accepting his fate, he'll teleport to the Crow Mother upstairs. Leave the basement. He'll ask you to bring Telbaril to the tower. Go talk to Telbaril, and return to the tower to end the quest.
If you threaten to kill the Crow Mother, she'll quickly flee to a separate location, directly north of the portal that brought you to Crow's Wood. Her den is in a trapdoor beneath a damaged tower. You'll fight her there. After you kill her, you'll find the Oran family back at the portal. Speak to Telbaril to complete the quest.
If you threaten to kill both her and Rolantaril, the Crow Mother flees south to her den. You will find her and Rulantaril engaged in combat as she tells him she wants to protect him and he tries to fend her off. Once you attack they will both turn on you. Once they are both dead you will find Telbaril back at the portal you entered from, where you can end the quest.
Notes[edit]
- You cannot speak to Rulantaril before choosing who to kill. Crow Mother's tower has a basement, but he doesn't appear there before you make your decision.

- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
