Lore:Torval Curiata
The Torval Curiata, or simply The Curiata,[1] is the militant arm of those that uphold Riddle'Thar's teachings and faiths across the province of Elsweyr,[2][3] such as the Temples of Two-Moons Dance.[4][5] The Curiata uphold the epiphany against those they deem heretics, like worshippers of daedra and organizations like the Twilight Cantors, who revere Azurah improperly. They considered themselves weapons of faith.[2][3] Enforcers in their ranks are known as Inquisitors, while their leader is known as the Grand Inquisitor.[6]
These inquisitors are not known for their subtlety.[3] The Inquisition of the Torval Curiata is a summons in front of the Grand Inquisitor and a council of lunar clergy about a particular subject.[7] Their methods of extracting information is said to "make your tail hairs bristle."[8] The Curiata are presumingly based in Torval, where the Mane resides and where other groups like the Bi-Lunar Guard are also found.[9][10] They hold the authority to relocate members of the lunar clergy, provided a formal petition is made,[1] organize trials,[7] as well to oversee temples.[11]
In 2E 582, when the Spirits of Amun-dro, writings on pre-ri'Datta myth by the eponymous priest became widespread and caught the attention of Khajiit across Pellitine, Thava-ko of the Curiata and her fellow priests wrote a three-volume epistle refuting and denouncing it. Several of their problems with the text include its account on Lorkhaj,[12], both its inclusion of daedra like Hermorah and Mafala and omittance of Mara and S'rendarr,[13] and its obsession of paths and laws that the Curiata deem as slavish obsession to Azurah, deference and respect to the daedra, and gateways into Lorkhaj's corruption.[14] In the same year, the case of Zerith-var of the Order of the Hidden Moon drew the attention of the Inquisition, which marked him for death,[15] but failed in their attempt to assassinate him.[16][17] This eventually resulted in the death of Grand Inquisitor Arsalan,[18][19] as Zerith-var was in the midst of saving Elsweyr from the threat of the Rajaska.[16]
