Anjaela was a Reachfolk botanist and the keeper of the Bloodthorn seed vault below the city of Markarth active during the Interregnum of the Second Era.[1]:30-32

History[edit]

Bloodthorn Vines
Markarth

Anjaela was known for maintaining a seed cache of various Bloodthorn subspecies in a deep, cavernous cellar beneath Markarth. She was extremely protective of her collection and guarded it with great caution. In time, her cache would prove to be of vital importance.[1]:30

Around 2E 582, several Reachfolk leaders secretly requested assistance from the Mages Guild due to a troubling surge in uncontrolled Bloodthorn Vine growth throughout the Reach. Although Bloodthorn vines are traditionally used in rituals and the crafting of effigies, darker groups,[1]:30-32 like the Gravesingers,[2] employed them for more sinister purposes. Typically, the Reachfolk were skilled at managing the plant, but recent reports described the vines attacking people.[1]:30-32

The Mages Guild responded, accompanied by the Fighters Guild to provide protection against any threats. Their initial goal was to study a range of Bloodthorn seeds. A convenient starting point was Anjaela's collection. By that time she was an elderly woman, though she remained fiercely protective of her collection. The Reachfolk who sought the Guild's help advised conducting the investigation quietly, under cover of night. Thanks to a timely diversion by the Fighters Guild, the cellar was unguarded, allowing the mission to proceed without major obstacles.[1]:30-32

Memebrs of the guild successfully obtained samples from Anjaela's seed vault without causing an incident. Following that, they traveled to Morthal to consult with a Bloodthorn herbalist based there.[1]:38 Befriends-Ivy assisted them in examining the samples.[1]:44 Their investigation eventually led to Greymoor Keep, where the Mages Guild intervened to destroy the unusually altered Bloodthorn plants to ensure the safety of the region.[1]:45 The Keep had been overrun with Bloodthorn vines, deliberately planted there. The Mages Guild successfully cleared the infestation. In gratitude, the Reachfolk leaders thanked the guilds for their assistance but advised them to avoid Markarth for a time, as Anjaela was still bitter over the theft of her precious seeds.[1]:50-51
