Released on February 24 2020.

Welcome to The Elder Scrolls Online v5.3.4 and the start of the Dark Heart of Skyrim with the Harrowstorm DLC game pack! Harrowstorm introduces two new 4-player dungeons – Icereach and Unhallowed Grave – in addition to a number of new item sets and collectibles. Our biggest focus for this update was further improving game performance, with an emphasis on frame rate stability, ultimately resulting in fewer drops in your game's framerate. The combat changes you'll see support this goal, which you can read more about in this forum post.

Additionally, please take note for this update, we're refreshing our patching and file manifest data to remove duplicate files and older data that is no longer needed. This will result in major improvements to load times, streaming of assets, reliability of asset loads, and a reduction of space taken up by the client on your hard drive. In order to achieve this, you will be required to re-download the entirety of the game. To this end, the size of this update is 64.22 GB. To read more about this patching overhaul, please visit this website article. Don't forget, we've added a free Crimson Torchbug Pet to the Crown Store for the next two weeks as a thank you for completing the re-download!

Finally, starting tomorrow on February 25, you'll be able to select Russian in the ESO launcher settings. Doing this will change the ESO launcher language to Russian – this only changes the language for the launcher, not the game. This launcher update is in preparation for ESO supporting Russian language text later this year – we'll be announcing a formal launch date soon so stay tuned!

New Features / Updates / Big Changes[edit]

Harrowstorm DLC Game Pack[edit]

Two New Dungeons[edit]
  • Icereach: Hidden among the churning waves of the Sea of Ghosts, this frigid isle serves as the seat of power for the cruel Icereach Coven. Now, lashing storms swirl around it. Could this be a natural phenomenon, or something more sinister?
  • Unhallowed Grave: Long ago, the soldiers of the Bangkorai Garrison buried something away in this accursed cavern—an evil too great to leave unguarded. Now, centuries later, even the most daring Redguard explorers know to give this grave a wide berth.
  • Icereach and Unhallowed Grave are 4-player Dungeons which can be reached via Wrothgar and Bangkorai respectively.
    • Icereach's entrance is in northern Wrothgar, on the coast. The entrance is a boat used to travel to the Dungeon.
    • Unhallowed Grave's entrance is in southeastern Bangkorai, southwest of the Fallen Wastes Dolmen.
  • Both Dungeons include a Normal version in addition to a challenging Veteran version.
  • There are unique item sets, including two new Undaunted Monster Mask sets, only available within the Dungeons.
  • Unique Achievement awards are available for completing the Dungeons, including:
    • A unique body marking
    • A unique weapon style
    • Several Titles
    • Unique housing items

Base Game[edit]

Performance Improvements[edit]

Frame rate stability improvements have been achieved by optimizing several systems. This means you will now encounter fewer drops in framerate, maintaining a smoother display of motion on screen. Please see below for a brief explanation of the technical work that was completed to support this.

  • Optimized multi-threading implementation to improve performance in situations with lots of effects (particles, projectile effects, weather, etc.) happening at the same time.
  • Optimized specific processes that could cause spikes in resource usage and cause FPS drops.
  • Parallelized the fixture update processes, allowing them to utilize multiple cores to improve overall performance of the game client.
  • Added additional miscellaneous CPU optimizations including the following:
    • Parallelized terrain loading
    • Optimized the Tutorial GUI
    • Optimized compass pins
    • Miscellaneous function improvements
New PvP Campaigns[edit]

Four new PvP campaigns have opened and are all appropriately themed with the Dark Heart of Skyrim. All previous campaigns have been shut down, and players previously assigned to these campaigns have been granted End of Campaign rewards, in addition to receiving a free Campaign Reassignment. The new campaigns include:

  • Blackreach: 30 day CP-enabled, Non-Alliance Locked
  • Ravenwatch: 30 day No CP, Non-Alliance Locked
  • Gray Host: 30 day CP-enabled, Alliance Locked
  • Icereach: 10-49 Campaign
New Collectibles[edit]

Knight of the Circle Armor and Weapon Outfit Styles are obtained by purchasing a Knight's Resolve or Knight's Rebuke from a War Researcher in Cyrodiil.

  • Knight's Resolve can be combined with 20 Arena Gladiator Proofs to generate a random style page for armor in the Knight of the Circle style.
  • Knight's Rebuke can be combined with 40 Arena Gladiator Proofs to generate a random style page for a weapon in the Knight of the Circle style.
  • These style pages are not bound, and can be freely traded with other players.
Master Writ Furnishings[edit]
Undaunted Achievement Furnishings[edit]

Undaunted Quartermasters now offer two new furnishings associated with the Harrowstorm dungeons:

  • Gray Reliquary (page): This ominous stone vessel contains the charred remains of an ancient army of the night. A haunting addition to even the darkest crypts.
  • Icereach Coven Totem, Emblem (page): The witches of Icereach Coven mark their territory with unsettling totems that showcase their emblem. Some claim this blood-hued wicker spiral represents their eternal hunger for power no matter the cost.
    • Purchase requires completing Icereach at any difficulty.

Elsweyr Fixes & Improvements[edit]

Combat & Gameplay[edit]

Necromancer[edit]
  • Due to many mechanical issues with the Necromancer's engagement with corpses and targeting of corpses, the following changes have been made in hopes to alleviate some of these shortcomings:
    • Blastbones and its morphs' corpses will now last 6 seconds, rather than 5 seconds.
    • Skeletal Mage and Spirit Mender and their morphs' corpses will now last 10 seconds, rather than 5 seconds.
    • Improved the targeting areas from all tether abilities, and will now link to the corpse closest to your reticle from a much larger radius.
      • Developer Comment: The goal of these changes is to help reduce situations where tether abilities do not grab a corpse in high combat load, as well as making it easier for Necromancers to feel in control of the amount of corpses on the field when utilizing their corpse generating abilities.
  • Grave Lord
    • Blastbones:
      • The skeleton from this ability and its morphs will now attempt to leap from up to 28 meters after a short delay of spawning in, rather than 15 meters.
      • Fixed an issue where the skeleton would appear to jump backwards when leaping in close ranges. The skeleton will now also properly attempt to face its target while leaping, rather than moon-walk jumping.
      • Increased the speed in which the skeleton jumps.
        • Developer Comment: The above changes were made in hopes to greatly reduce situations where the Blastbones would become confused while walking around and take longer than intended - or completely fail – to reach its target. We understand the change to this ability significantly reduces the morph functionality of Stalking Blastbones in most situations, but we've opted to keep it untouched while we gauge feedback on how the changes to the base ability and reliability of the attack feel. Keep in mind that Stalking Blastbones guarantees at least a 10% damage increase over the base morph, so even in situations where it jumps immediately, this morph isn't completely wasted; it just will not reach its highest scaling unless the Blastbones needs to gain line of sight on the target you initially cast it on.
    • Boneyard:
      • Reduced the cost of this ability and its morphs to 3780, down from 4950.
      • Fixed an issue where the synergy granted from this ability and its morphs would fail to deal damage if you activated it from the edge of its radius.
  • Bone Tyrant
    • Bitter Harvest
      • Deaden Pain (morph): Fixed an issue where the Major Protection from this ability was not extending if you had Jorvuld's Guidance or other duration extending bonuses.
    • Bone Totem:
      • Agony Totem: Fixed an issue where visual effects for the synergy of Pure Agony's cooldown indicator would appear to allies who were still on cooldown. The beam of necromantic light will now only show itself when you can activate the synergy.
  • Living Death
    • Reanimate: Fixed an issue where this ability and its morphs would not trigger events that required Resurrections to proc.

Dungeons & Group Content[edit]

Sunspire Trial

  • The following abilities will now play the correct impact sound effects:
    • Alkosh's Will's Furious Sweeps
    • Fury of Alkosh's Furious Swipe
    • Fiery Rage

Halls of Fabrication Trial

  • Developer Comment: In reviewing Halls of Fabrication, we evaluated the Trial based on a number of factors - rate of completion, age of content, player feedback/sentiment, etc. - and felt adjustments were needed. The changes below will result in the extreme difficulty spikes being toned down a bit, making it more accessible for more players.
  • General
    • The Draining Shock ability no longer drains Magicka of those affected by the Damage over Time.
  • Hunter-Killer Fabricants
    • Reduced the health of Refabricated Spheres, Hunter-Killer Negatrix and Positrox on Veteran difficulty.
    • Reduced the damage from the Charged Gore and Static Cascade abilities.
    • The Static Cascade ability no longer stuns those affected by it.
  • Pinnacle Factotum
    • Reduced the health of the Pinnacle Factotum, Refabricated Centurions and Power Storms.
    • The Shockwave ability no longer stuns targets affected by it.
  • Refabrication Committee
    • Reduced the damage of the Melting Point ability and the rate at which the damage increases.
    • Reduced the damage of the Fulminate and Grasping Limbs abilities.
    • Reduced the health of the summoned Ruined Factotums on Veteran difficulty.
    • Increased the minimum range at which the Reclaimer can summon Ruined Fabricants into the fight.
      • Developer Comment: This should provide more time to kill the Ruined Fabricants before they reach the Reclaimer and become empowered.
  • Assembly General
    • Reduced the rate at which Seeker Projectiles increase in damage with successive hits.
    • The bleed from Whirring Blade now has an appropriate icon.

Combat & Gameplay[edit]

Combat & Abilities[edit]

General[edit]
  • Updated block to be calculated more efficiently by the server, similarly to Sprint. Sets and passives that key off block or "While Blocking/While Bracing" now more accurately update as you transition between actively blocking and not.
    • Overall, the core block behaviors are untouched between mechanics and cost.
    • We will be monitoring the forums and other areas for feedback and bug reports, so please make sure to provide feedback on this change if you run into any strange behaviors or have questions.
  • Activating block while animating an ability or attack will now blend the animation more fluidly instead of completely obfuscating the attack. The core mechanics to block cancelling remain untouched, but now display more of the previous attack's animation before your character animates the block.
    • Note the visual effects for blocking still appear as soon as block as officially activated, which has been untouched in terms of how long it takes to activate.
  • Fixed an issue where you could activate Block when you didn't have enough Stamina to actually block the next attack. You will now need to have adequate resources based on your Block cost in order to activate and successfully Block the next attack.
    • Attacks that reduce your Stamina to 0 continue to remove Block after you successfully mitigate the effect. In some some cases where a secondary effect like Bleeds occur, the Bleed will still be applied. This is currently not intended and will be adjusted in the future.
  • Attacks that reduce your Stamina to 0 continue to remove Block after you successfully mitigate the effect. Effects that normally would be mitigated via block through this scenario will no longer cancel their effects, since your ability to block has been removed.
  • Fixed an issue where using a single target charge, leap, or teleport ability would not remove targets from stealth or invisibility while you had a detection potion active.
  • Fixed an issue where many Damage over Time effects were gaining the effectiveness of Stealth bonuses, such as guaranteed critical strikes or stunning targets.
  • Fixed many issues where sources of healing could be dodged or blocked if sourced from item sets or NPC abilities.
  • Bash now properly cancels channeled abilities when you do not have a target to successfully bash.
  • The following "thorns", or damage return-based abilities, now have a 7 meter range on their effect, rather than infinite ranges:
  • Summoned pets from player abilities, such as Summon Unstable Familiar, will now behave more consistently with other abilities when entering deep water. This means they will no longer deal damage or heal while in this state. Leaving deep water will return the pet to its default state, which in some cases, may require the ability to be reactivated.
  • Fixed an issue where some leap and charge abilities could not be cast while immobilized.
  • Fixed an issue where many leap and charge abilities would move your character in odd ways if you cast the ability in close range.
  • Updated the control and responsiveness of many charge and leap abilities so they reach fast moving targets more reliably, as well as allow you take action more fluidly after casting them.
  • Fixed an issue where many leap and charge abilities would fail to apply their effects if you began sprinting after activating them.
  • Off Balance will now properly update its size against the varying Target Dummies.
  • Updated Off Balance to behave more consistently across content in the game.
    • Off Balance now lasts 7 seconds from player sourced abilities and sets.
    • Off Balance is no longer reapplied to a target for 15 seconds once the original source of Off Balance ends. This cooldown is displayed as a debuff on targets once they are affected.
    • Off Balance is no longer consumed on targets from Heavy Attacks or abilities.
    • Note these rules may be irrelevant in some areas, such as tutorials, where the core focus is teaching the behavior of what Off Balance does
Buffs and Debuffs[edit]
  • Major & Minor Heroism: These buffs will now only grant Ultimate while in combat. This prevents these buffs from keeping you in combat longer than intended.
Dragonknight[edit]
  • Ardent Flame
    • Dragonknight Standard: Fixed an issue where the first 3 ticks of this Ultimate and its morphs would appear to happen instantaneously.
    • Lava Whip:
      • Flame Lash (morph): The special attack from this ability, Power Lash, can now also be cast on enemies that are Immobilized.
  • Draconic Power
    • Dragon Leap: This Ultimate will now properly animate its leap on targets, regardless of its range, resulting in more overall reaction time for those on the receiving end of being DK dunked.
    • Protective Scale: This ability now grants damage mitigation to abilities more appropriately described in the tooltip.
  • Earthen Heart
    • Helping Hands: This passive no longer triggers off Stamina costing Earthen Heart abilities, namely being Stonefist and Stone Giant.
      • Developer Comment: While the numbers previously balanced themselves out with the higher cost on Stonefist but the return of this passive, it made using the ability early or when low on resources overly penalizing. We've opted to simply reduce the cost to a normal amount and implement an exclusion so it doesn't interact with this passive, resulting in less polarizing experiences with the ability.
    • Molten Weapons:
      • Molten Armaments (morph): Fixed an issue where the Major Brutality granted from this ability could fail to apply to group members in certain situations.
    • Stonefist: Updated this ability to improve its visual storytelling and per-cast impact; Stonefist is now a two-part ability instead of a singular instant mid-ranged attack.
      • Activating this ability will now stomp the earth, causing you to deal damage in an area around you after a short cast time, and generating 3 charges of the ability.
      • Activating the ability again allows you to lob one of the earthen spheres around you to an enemy from up to 28 meters away to damage them.
      • The base ability no longer has the Stagger mechanic, but instead the final charge will stun the enemy hit upon dealing damage.
      • Reduced the cost of this ability and the Stone Giant morph to 2295 from 3443.
        • Stone Giant (morph):
          • This morph retains stagger in the form of causing the targets affected by the ranged attack to take additional damage.
          • Increased the damage taken per stack to 65 at rank IV, up from 45.
          • This morph now applies Stagger to enemies hit by the initial cast to help improve the impact of landing the cast time.
Nightblade[edit]
  • Shadow
    • Consuming Darkness: Fixed an issue where the synergy granted from this ability and its morphs could only be activated when at a certain health threshold, which was not previously communicated. It can now be activated any time when you meet the listed requirements and are not on cooldown.
    • Path of Darkness: Fixed an issue where the visual effects from this ability could persist longer than intended.
Sorcerer[edit]
  • Daedric Summoning
    • Summon Unstable Familiar: Reduced the cost of the special activate of this ability and the Summon Volatile Familiar morph to 3510, down from 4500.
  • Storm Calling

      • Fixed an issue where this ability's damage did not properly generate hit reactions against enemies.
  • Restoring Light
    • Sacred Ground: This passive no longer snares enemies in the area. Instead, it increases your Block Mitigation by an additional 10% while standing in one of the mentioned abilities.
Warden[edit]

  • One Hand and Shield
  • Restoration Staff
    • Panacea
      • Life Giver (morph): Fixed an issue where casting this ability would fail to trigger events that required "when applying a damage shield" since the ability automatically casts a shield.

    • Berserker Strike:
      • Fixed an issue where this ability and its morphs couldn't proc the Soul Lock passive.
      • Reduced the damage done by this ability and its morphs by approximately 16% to better account for the fact that it also ignores mitigation.

        • This morph now stuns enemies who are already off balance.
        • Enemies hit by this ability that are immune to Off Balance are now snared by 40% for 2 seconds.
          • Developer Comment: Like the situation of Power Lash, the changes to Off Balance greatly affected the power of this morph in one-on-one scenarios. While we are okay with the loss of a frequent stun on a spammable, we wanted to still ensure this morph didn't feel like it wasn't adding anything to your gameplay throughout the entirety of the fight; we've opted to add in a function that helps you become more "sticky" to your target when trying to use it multiple times. Traditionally, we try and avoid CC's without intense requirements on high damage abilities, but similar to Puncturing Strikes, cast time abilities are far harder to land at a frequent cadence, so we are more comfortable adding the snare here in addition to enabling a contextual stun with Off Balance.
Armor[edit]
  • Heavy Armor
    • Unstoppable
      • Unstoppable Brute (morph): The cost reduction of CC break for this ability is now properly linked to the Major Resolve it grants, and will increase in duration with bonuses such as Jorvuld's Guidance, but will also be lost if a longer source of Major Resolve is applied.
World[edit]
  • Soul Magic
    • Soul Trap: Fixed an issue where Soul Trap and its morphs would not clear when clearing all spent points while respeccing.

Itemization & Item Sets[edit]

General[edit]
  • Updated many item sets that key off the act of actively holding block, dubbed "Bracing", to use this terminology in their respective tooltips. This will prevent confusion where they are not meant to work with abilities that allow you to block without needing to brace, such as Shield Wall.
Consumables[edit]
  • Fixed an issue where poisons that dealt damage would inconsistently apply the Poisoned status effect when compared to other Damage over Time effects. They will now all properly have a 3% chance to apply this status per tick.
  • Fixed an issue where poisons would not use your highest Critical Strike chance.
  • Attempting to drink a potion while unable to drink no longer plays the sound effects that you actually drank the potion. Since you didn't.
  • Fixed an issue where some potions could be activated while stunned.
  • Fixed an issue where some poisons would proc effects that required a potion to be consumed. You shouldn't be drinking those…
Item Sets[edit]
  • The following item sets will now more appropriately react to your block state to display their functions:
  • Affliction: Fixed an issue where this set would apply Minor Defile and have a 15% chance to apply Diseased. It will now always apply the Diseased status effect instead, since that debuff applies Minor Defile already.
  • Arch-Mage: This set now properly triggers off Restoration Heavy Attacks.
  • Armor of Truth: This set now grants its bonus after dealing damage to an enemy who is Off Balance, rather than after setting an enemy Off Balance.
    • Developer Comment: The overall power of this set should be the same when used in fights against multiple opponents, but its total dueling power has been reduced to better meet its intended function of fighting outnumbered.
  • Ashen Grip:
    • This set no longer forces your character into an animation, potentially getting it stuck or displaying odd behaviors.

    • Reduced the cooldown of the application of this set to 4 seconds, down from 10.

    • Reduced the damage shield this set provides to 5000 from 8600.
    • Reduced the damage per tick to 500 from 770.
      • Developer Comment: Iceheart has long been a powerful defensive set that has become a staple for situations where you want to sacrifice damage for survivability, especially in instances such as Maelstrom Arena and no-death Trial runs. While we love the idea of sets that help make these challenges easier, the overall value of the defensive power from this set was far too enabling for its ease of proc conditions and passive gameplay. We've opted to reduce the size of the shield, and slightly reduce the damage for maintaining the shield while retaining the ease of proc and high uptime, since much of the feedback for the set was based on the desire to keep those specific qualities.
  • Infallible Mage: Fixed an issue where this set's damage amp was not properly applying to all Heavy Attacks. Note that the Minor Vulnerability now follows its tooltip, and requires a fully-charged Heavy Attack to apply.
  • Infernal Guardian:

    • Updated the tooltip to better reflect the proc conditions for this set, and fixed numerous issues where it would not obey its listed and intended proc conditions.

    • Reduced the amount of Armor granted to 4620, down from 6450.
    • The bonus damage now adds a flat 6086 damage to your Bash attacks, rather than a separate proc of 5805 Shock damage.
    • Updated the tooltip to properly mention the cooldown of this damage bonus.
  • Juggernaut: Fixed an issue where the heal from this set could Critically Strike.
  • Leki's Focus:
    • This set now grants Major Evasion rather than a unique buff.

  • You can now only queue as a solo player into Battlegrounds.
  • Reset the Battleground matchmaking ratings for all players.
    • Developer Comment: This is a big change to Battlegrounds matchmaking which we are executing partially in response to player feedback and partially as an experiment. We recognize the change will prevent players from being able to reliably team up with friends in Battlegrounds, but it should also improve both the speed of matchmaking and the competitiveness of PvP matches. As part of the change, we are resetting the matchmaking rating (MMR) of all players, so going forward, the system more properly evaluates individuals based on their performance in the solo queue. We'll be closely monitoring both player feedback and the impact of these changes on the system.
  • All game modes for Ald Carac are now using the initial launch version of the map.
