Scrolls are magical documents that can be used to cast spells. Anyone can use a scroll, regardless of magic skill, and casting a scroll does not use any Magicka. However, each scroll can only be used once. Also, using a scroll does not provide any magic experience.

All of the scrolls in your inventory are listed under Scrolls in the All Magic tab of your Journal. Scrolls are cast the same way as spells. There is a glitch with scrolls, however: if you select a scroll from the Magic tab of your Journal and then drop it, you will still be able to cast the spell without using up the scroll.

Finding Scrolls[edit]

Most scrolls are found as random loot. The following tables provide the level at which the scroll will start to appear in random loot; a value of 0 in the Level column indicates that the scroll is never actually found in random loot.

Some scrolls are also available in fixed locations. The Uses column provides the number of instances of that scroll that can be found in specific places (which may include being in the inventory of an NPC). A value of 0 in the Uses column means that the scroll has no guaranteed locations and therefore is only found as random loot.

There are a large number of chests that have a chance of containing a scroll. These include:

  • 36 chests with a 100% chance of containing a scroll. These are primarily boss-level chests in conjurer dungeons; there are also some boss-level chests in forts containing monsters.
  • 52 chests with a 50% chance of containing a scroll. These are primarily boss-level chests in necromancer dungeons.
  • 360 chests with a 25% chance of containing a scroll. These include standard chests in conjurer dungeons and boss-level chests in vampire dungeons.
  • Nearly 1500 chests with a 10% chance of containing a scroll, which basically includes most other chests in the game.

If you install the Spell Tomes official plug-in, Spell Tomes may be found in place of scrolls in chests and on NPCs.

NPCs that sell Novice- (from level 1) and Apprentice-leveled (from level 6) scrolls:

Containers and enemies that contain/carry scrolls that respawn (like dungeons):

  • All Necromancers spawn with 2 scrolls. However, these are only Damage Health/Element/Magicka/Attribute, Drain Health/Fatigue/Magicka, Disintegrate or Silence types. The best dungeons to find these are Fort Istirus (34.3 on average), Fort Linchal (31.4) and Silorn (32, but has 4 zones). Mythic Dawn members encountered in Dagon Shrine may also be carrying scrolls.
  • Zealots and HereticsSI: In addition to this, with exception of Rotten Den (dungeon specific) and bosses, most Zealots and Heretics carry on average 1 scroll, some Zealots 0.5 (Xavara and Xiditte). Fain (11.3), Xavara, Xiditte, Knifepoint Hollow and The Howling Halls are the best sources. The temple on the hill west of the exterior of Xedilian always has three Zealots, the ruined church far west of The Howling Halls has potentially two and Dreamwalk Camp also has two Heretics. In addition, the Breakneck Camp Heretics and several other Zealots varieties have a possibility to carry more specific Bound and Summons scrolls. Apostles have these lists as well, but they do not respawn when killed. Only a few specific dungeons scrolls are missing from these lists.
  • 2 Necromancer Adepts spawn as bosses at Moss Rock Cavern, as well as two other necromancers (on average). They may possibly carry 2 scrolls (only Damage Health/Element/Magicka/Attribute, Drain Health/Fatigue/Magicka, Disintegrate or Silence types). The two boss chests and two regular chests together contain 1.2 scrolls as well (any type).
  • Dremora also carry scrolls. Mages always carry an average of 2 scrolls, whereas melee and archer Churls have a 10% chance of carrying one, but higher leveled Dremora may carry up to 1.5 scrolls. These may be about every type of scrolls, except for particular Summon scrolls. In addition, Planes of Oblivion containers have a 10% chance of containing a scroll, whereas boss containers have 25% of having a scroll.
  • As for obtaining non-npc specific scrolls (so any type), the following dungeon zones contain the highest average amount of scrolls: Echo Necromancer's Chamber (4.9), and Fort Rayles Hall of Winter (3 scrolls).
  • Ceyatatar has three Conjurer boss chests. Simply enter from the exterior trap door, then get the loot from the boss ayleid cask (1.25 scrolls). Once you have cleared the entire dungeon, save outside, then reload to access the rest of the dungeon. Be sure to also save just before entering the first zone where another easily accessible boss chest is located. This dungeons has 4.7 scrolls on average. Fyrelight - Deep Canyon is another great source for 2 easily-accessible scrolls from a monster boss chest (save outside door E). This dungeon contains 3.1 scrolls on average.

NPCs that have level-dependent amount of scrolls:

  • When finishing Through A Nightmare, Darkly you'll gain 6 scrolls at the end. Simply save just before speaking to Henantier after returning to Bravil.
  • The cupboard on the southwest wall in the Chironasium containing the completed mage's staff at the end of A Mage's Staff also contains 5 Apprentice-leveled scrolls. It's contents will not respawn.
  • Ancotar has a leveled scroll, you can pickpocket this at the start of every level.
  • Evangeline Beanique has two leveled scrolls (in addition to potions, a possibly enchanted blunt weapon and leveled staff), you can pickpocket these at the start of every level. However, she is rather hard to get to after the quest The Ultimate Heist.
  • Relmyna VerenimSI has three leveled ranged combat scroll, you can pickpocket this at the start of every level.
  • HalionSI has a leveled scroll, you can pickpocket this at the start of every level.
  • Wide-EyeSI has 50% of carrying a leveled scroll, you can pickpocket this at the start of every level.
