A Daedric Titan (Legends)

Daedric Titans, commonly referred to simply as Titans,[1] are giant winged Daedra that serve Molag Bal as war-slaves. They were first created in imitation of the Dragons of Nirn when Bal's interrogation of Boziikkodstrun proved fruitless. After modifying Boziikkodstrun's skeleton and substituting his soul for a Daedric vestige, Bal created the first Titan.[2] Daedric Titans are anatomically similar to Dragons, although with dark black skin and prehensile frontal limbs. They have the ability to speak a spell of flaming essence-drain that can debilitate an opponent with a single word, similar to the power of the thu'um.[2] They are notoriously difficult to kill.

They serve Molag Bal as the guardians of souls,[UOL 1] and therefore the keepers of black soul gems.[3] However, they are also posted to guard other strategic resources.[UOL 1] According to some sources, Titans were released upon Tamriel for the first time[nb 1] during the attempted Planemeld of the Second Era. Specifically, Molag Bal released them into the skies over the Imperial City when a portal to Coldharbour was opened above the White-Gold Tower in 2E 582.[4]

Daedric Titans eventually came to serve other Daedric Princes, such as Boethiah, who had them summoned to fight mortals for her amusement.[5] Mehrunes Dagon has Ash Titans in his army. Unlike their blue cousins, Ash Titans have red skin, and breathe regular flames rather than blue cold-fire.[6]

Shackled Titan[edit]

A Shackled Titan (ESO)

Shackled Titans are a variety of Daedric Titan that have had their wings ripped off by Molag Bal as a form of punishment, grounding them. These four-legged Daedra are bound by Bal's dark will to serve as mounts for his mortal servants. Such mounts are usually barded for protection, and possess the ability to cloak themselves in cold-fire. Ser the Wingshorn is a Shackled Titan who was known to the Worm Cult; it was said to have failed Molag Bal only once prior to being bound.[7]

Notes[edit]

  • ^  Daedric Titans were said to have been released upon Tamriel for the first time during the Planemeld. This would match the story of Boziikkodstrun's corruption, which describes him bounding up the Endless Stair, a structure which is rumored to have been created by the Mad Architect some time between 2E 578 and 2E 582.[8] However, this timeline is contradicted by the appearance of Titans on Tamriel at earlier points in history.[9][10]
  • Molag Bal has referred to the titan Ozozzachar as his son.[11]
  • Sotha Sil constructed a Clockwork Titan to house the soul of Saint Olms the Just during an experiment to see if he could grant mortals everlasting life.[12]
